“With unemployment, so high, for so long, for so many the
grasp on the American dream—a better life for ourselves and our children
---seems to be slipping away….You can go down to the Salvation Army and see
young couples and their children. They have been unemployed, not for
months but for one or two years. They’ve seen their savings dwindle and
become depleted. Their health insurance is gone, and they are scared to
death of the hospital bill should a child or themselves become ill. And
maybe they’ve seen the for sale sign nailed to the door of the home they
struggled to save for…..We are going to need the help of these Americans in
building a better future for this country. Ignoring their hopes and
perpetuating their fear is irresponsible. National stewardship
demands of us a higher standard…..” (JOHN HEINZ, May 6,
1983)
